The ten guest rooms, all with private baths and air conditioning, extend to our guests a feeling of warmth and elegance.

The History of The Duke of Windsor Inn

The Duke of Windsor Inn is named in honor of the fabled monarch, Edward VIII, who gave up the throne of England to wed a commoner, Wallis Warfield Simpson of Baltimore, Maryland.

The home was built in 1896 by the York Brothers builders for Delaware River boat pilot Harry Hazelhurst and his wife Florence. Since Harry and his wife were grand in scale (both were over six feet tall), the rooms are large and airy, and the stairway that vaults three stories is extra wide and gracious.

The house was used as a hospital during World War II; then suffered years of neglect until it was converted into a Bed and Breakfast Inn in 1982. It has been lovingly restored to recapture all the charm of a bygone era. Antiques abound throughout the Inn, creating a feeling of elegant grandeur for all who stay here.

"We love Cape May and now we love The Duke of Windsor. What a warm and wonderful place."  Harley and Patti, Fort Washington, PA

Cape May...The jewel of the Jersey shore...

Cape May & Area Activities:

Cape May is the nation's oldest seashore resort. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, her charm lies in the ambiance of the Victorian architecture, with over 600 buildings dating over one hundred years ago. Deciding which time of year to visit Cape May can be difficult, for each season has so much to offer.

Cape May Weather

Spring comes early to Cape May, and tulips are in bloom everywhere in April, particularly for the Tulip and Garden Festival. April is also home of the Cape May Jazz Festival, and in May birders from all over the world come for the Annual World Series of Birding.

Or course, the summer season is Cape May's busiest time. Along with the finest beaches, there is boating, fishing, kayaking, bicycling, and tennis, to name just a few of the many outdoor activities. The Cape May Whale Watcher and the Schooner Yankee are two very popular summer activities. Nearby is golf (try the beautiful Cape May National Golf Club), horseback riding, botanical gardens, bird watching, and the famous lighthouse at the Cape May Point State Park.

Many visitors find the fall months the best time to visit Cape May. The days are still warm, and the nights cool. From the Food and Wine Festival in September, to Victorian Week in mid-October, to Sherlock Holmes Weekend and the Jazz Festival in November, there is always something going on.

December finds Cape May decked out in Victorian splendor. There are tours every day from Thanksgiving to New Year's where you can see inside so many of the beautiful Victorian homes, as well as enjoy all the beautiful outside lights. The shops are open, and you may experience the most Christmas spirit you've ever had in your life.

Whether it be a horse drawn carriage ride, a walk on the beach, or a couples massage at our Cape May Day Spa, Cape May has become a year-round resort, with many of the fine restaurants and shops staying open all year. For, after all, shopping and eating may be two of Cape May's finest pastimes.

Evenings in Cape May can be even more fun than the daylight activities. Our live theater at the Cape May Stage and the East Lynne Theater Company provide quality entertainment year-round. And the Cape May Jazz Festival has become very popular in April and November every year.

But nothing can quite compare to all of our wonderful restaurants. Cape May boasts of more than 50 restaurants, many gourmet, so there is sure to be one to please your palate.

There are several web-sites that will tell you everything you need to know about what is going on in Cape May throughout the year. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts has much information on the historic house tours, the trolley rides, the Physic Estate tours, and the Lighthouse. Four other sites: CapeMayLinks.com, CapeMay.com, Cape May Times, and the Chamber of Commerce, can provide help in planning your next trip to Cape May.
